What is Mentor Coaching?

For most, Mentor Coaching means being advised and guided on your coaching skills.  This collaborative process is based on an observed or recorded coaching session to increase the coach’s capability in coaching.  For most this is done in preparation for a coach certification.

While certification is important, I believe that mentoring at any stage can be extremely beneficial.   Getting feedback gives us reflection and practice .  It is not coaching on business goals, marketing strategies, personal development but simply on your coaching skills.

ICF Mentor Coaching

In order to apply for an ICF credential, you are required to have been coached for a minimum of 10 hours over a minimum of 3 months by a qualified Mentor Coach who holds ICF certification at the same or higher level than that which you are applying for.  At least three of these hours must be one-on-one with the mentor coach.

To renew your Associate Certified Coach (ACC) credential, you require an additional 10 hours of mentor coaching since the initial award of your credential.

The ICF also count mentor coaching as Continuing Coach Education (CCEs). In the ICF Core Competencies, Competency 2. “Embodies a Coaching Mindset” emphasizes the importance of mentor coaching because it requires coaches to:

  • Engage in ongoing learning and development as a coach
  • Develop an ongoing reflective practice to enhance one’s coaching
  • Seek help from outside sources when necessary

Who Needs Coach Mentoring?

Any coach that wants to improve their coaching skills.   Once we graduate from our training (whether it is ICF accredited or not) we no longer have the opportunity to have our coaching observed by anyone except our clients.   We can go back and listen to our own sessions (which I highly recommend) but that is not the same as getting feedback from another experienced coach.

As mentioned above, mentoring is required for an ICF certification.  But even if you are not looking for formal certification, mentoring can be an invaluable tool.

“But my clients are benefiting from my coaching, so I think I am doing fine.”  I said the same thing until I got mentoring from a trusted ICF mentor.  Mentoring completely opened my eyes to bad habits and crucial areas that improved my coaching immensely.  It has truly made me a much better coach.
